He was addicted to heroin and cocaine. He started at the age of 6-8. He was in and out of jail and rehab from 1996 through 2001. He was in and out of jail for a few years until 2003 when he met his current wife Susan Downey who gave him an ultimatum telling him that he had to quit drugs for good. Downey started therapy, entered a 12-step program, took up meditation, and the martial art of Wing Chun Kung Fu. He described his addiction as a coma he finally got out of. In the past nobody knew about his addiction, until 1996 because he was arrested for possession of heroin and cocaine. His former wife left him with their child, got a divorced and he went bankrupt. Downey is actually doing pretty well with the Iron Man franchise. But there was a time where nobody wanted to hire him. Until Mel Gibson casted him in the lead role of a film.
